Hi, YMCA Team 👋

We’d love to be your new Comedy Instructors!

Commonwealth Comedy is a group of seasoned, professional, values-driven comedians in Hampton Roads.

We’ve each been teaching, performing, and coaching for 7+ years and are excited to be offering new classes this spring!

Introducing:

Foundations of Improv

This class is designed to introduce students to the world of improvisational comedy and the art of “yes and-ing”.

Our Foundations Classes are customized for different age groups.

  • Kids 8-12

Our Kid’s Classes engage kids in the art of improv to encourage creativity, communication and expression. During classes we play fun games, work on becoming characters, and explore the world of make believe while co-creating an environment of trust and friendship.

  • Teens 13-17

Our Teen Classes a place where the fun of youth and exploration of young adulthood merge. While learning the ropes of improv comedy, teens develop communication and public speaking skills as well as storytelling and connection abilities.

  • Adults 18+

Our Adult Improv Classes help students break out of their shells, build confidence, and connect with other individuals who are open-minded, respectful, and excited to have FUN! While learning the basics of improv, students participate in scene work, learn to work together, and play in a make believe land re-engages our imaginations while strengthening communication skills.

While improv is fun and silly, it can also be incredibly healing.

Improv requires vulnerability and building trust with others.

It’s in spaces like this where we’re free to express and create that we reconnect with joy and gain a sense of presence that can be hard to tap into on a day to day basis.

Not only does it require mind and body, it’s wildly helpful for the spirit too in both children and adults.

More than LOLZ.

Our curriculum combines comedy training with trauma-informed coaching to create psychologically safe spaces where students build trust in themselves and improve their communication skills and relationship dynamics overtime.

When you find something fun that is also helpful, you can’t help but want to share it with others.

Improv can help with:
- Increasing confidence
- Public speaking
- Interpersonal relations
- Listening
- Constructive Communication
- and so much more…

Our teaching team has coached and taught at local comedy theaters, The Hurrah Players, The Zeiders American Dream Theater, Virginia Wesleyan University, Woodrow Wilson High School and more!
